New day, new challenges

Parenthood is a rollercoaster, but all we really want is happy, healthy children. It's my job to support you to do the best for your growing child.

Whether you're in the trenches of new parenthood, facing a new dilemma, or seeking a new approach to a long-term problem, naturopathy can help.

Because it's gentle and non-intrusive, you can feel comfortable about taking a naturopathic approach for your unsettled and colicky infant, picky eater or older child struggling with stress and anxiety. Whatever you – and they – are facing, you aren't the first and you won't be the last. I'm here to provide natural supports for age-old problems.

Who is it for?

Naturopathy is for any child, at any age. As the name suggests, it's a natural option to support health and promote wellbeing.

Being a parent has probably never been more challenging – we're bombarded with information and loaded with expectation. Sometimes what we need most is a guiding hand to educate and support us as we do our absolute best for our kids.

I work with you on diet, lifestyle and nutrition to optimise your child's health.  Some of the issues parents come to me with include:

  • Sleep concerns
  • Poor appetite
  • General diet and nutritional advice for failing to thrive
  • General Anxiety Disorder
  • Constipation
  • Bed Wetting

  • Skin problems
  • Allergies/intolerances
  • Recurring colds or infections
  • Behavioural or concentration challenges
  • Growth and development
  • Hormonal imbalances

How does it work?

Children are not, in fact, mini adults – they're constantly developing and their systems operate very differently. For that reason, naturopathy looks at all the interconnected factors for wellbeing, and tailors supports to meet their ever changing needs for energy, vitamins and minerals at each developmental stage.

I may recommend testing to uncover any nutritional deficiencies, alongside a program which taps into the medicinal qualities of food and nutritional medicine, as well as targeted lifestyle strategies.

Sometimes the biggest source of stress for a parent isn't the symptom your child is experiencing, but the confusion and concern over why it's happening. The strength of naturopathy lies in our approach – we apply naturopathic science and holistic medicine to find the core cause of an illness or issue and address it, naturally.

We don't just stick a medicinal bandaid on the problem – we drill down to it's roots to fully understand what's going on and why.

Frequently Asked Questions

Breastfeeding can be incredibly challenging, but it's always worthwhile. As a naturopath it gives me immense satisfaction to support women on their breastfeeding journey. From supports to help prevent or treat mastitis, to nutritional support for mum as she gives the best of everything to baby, naturopathy is a great resource for breastfeeding.

First up, it's really important to make sure you're eating and drinking enough when you're breastfeeding. Think of it as fuel to not only give you energy, but to feed your baby. I can support you with some simple strategies to boost or manage the quantity and quality of your milk, simply through food, water and some supports found in nature.

If your child is experiencing colic, probiotics and herbal treatments are options to ease their discomfort. Where there are concerns that baby is reacting to your breastmilk, I can offer dietary support to identify problem foods while providing the supplementation you need for your own health and wellbeing and the production of high-quality breastmilk.

While your child's immune system is fully developed at birth it's not fully matured until it has been exposed to both 'good' and 'bad' bacteria, which happens over time. Herbal medicine or supplementation can improve your child's immune function and, because some 80% of your immune system is located in your gut, probiotics are great for helping maintain a healthy microbiome.

Underpinning all that are, of course, sleep and nutrition. Sleep is critical – without enough of it, your child's immune function can be reduced, making them more susceptible to illness. Diet should be nutrient dense, prioritising three serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day, alongside protein, iron rich foods and plenty of water. If sleep or diet are proving challenging, naturopathy can help.

Routine is key when it comes to children's sleep. In the wind-down to bedtime it's important to create a calming environment – no screens or sugary foods and ensure that they're getting the emotional support they need to process the day's events. Create a gentle routine of bath, brush teeth, stories and bed. Chamomile tea with honey in warm milk can be helpful, as can magnesium – but always check with a health practitioner before introducing.

As ever, a healthy diet – rich in high quality, nutrient dense foods including protein, fats, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals – is hugely important. Likewise, enough sleep and hydration. Beyond that, Omega-3 fatty acids are critical for healthy brain development and function. Probiotics too can play a significant role, balancing the friendly flora in your child's gut to promote digestive health, which in turn supports cognitive function and concentration.

The body shares lots of clues about what does and doesn't agree with our individual systems. Symptoms of a food intolerance can appear within three days of eating, and can include rashes, behavioural changes (including concentration problems, irritability and anxiety), headaches, bowel changes, bloating and more. If you're concerned that your child has a food intolerance or allergy, we can discuss testing options such as IgG Food Blood Panels or, for mild cases, take a supervised 'fast and challenge' approach, where we systematically remove foods from your child's diet, before carrying out a controlled reintroduction (challenge) to identify systemic responses.
