Nurturing mum and baby

Are you experiencing morning or all day sickness?

Would you like help with birth preparation?

Are you struggling with fatigue or anxiety?

Have you been diagnosed with gestational diabetes?

If any of these sound like you, reach out.

Congratulations!

Your body is doing amazing things right now, which means it needs additional nutritional support to help it along the way. You're creating a whole new person –  from the top of their head to those teeny, tiny toes – not to mention a whole raft of changes taking place in your own body to make that happen.

There's no better time to optimise your health and nutrition and lay some important building blocks for your new baby.

While pregnancy is incredibly exciting, we also know it isn't necessarily easy. Carrying a child can take a significant toll on your body, as well as the emotional  impact of this life-changing experience.
That's precisely why I'm here – to support you through the individual highs and hiccups of pregnancy.

Who is it for?

Naturopathy is for any mum and baby to be. That's because the right nutrition and health support throughout pregnancy can help minimise the risk of complications, support your birth choices and recovery, set you up for those tricky days of early parenthood and breastfeeding, and give your child the best possible start in life

Natural medicine is also a great choice for some of the less pleasant side-effects of your happy event, including:

  • Restless legs
  • Heartburn and reflux
  • Anaemia
  • Fatigue and/or sleeplessness
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Cramps, aches and pains
  • Fluid retention
  • Varicose veins
  • High blood pressure
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Cracked nipples
  • Engorgement
  • Mastitis
  • Immune Support

How does it work?

Every body and every pregnancy is different, so I'll start by understanding yours.

You are the only source of nutrition for your baby, and its growing body gets 'first dibs' on all the good stuff – we'll need to make sure you're taking in all the nutrients needed to sustain you both.

I'll provide you with nutritional education and advice specific to your needs and, because all pregnant women require some degree of nutritional supplementation, I'll recommend the right supplements for you.

As you approach the birth, herbal medicines can support uterine circulation and muscle tone, help soften the cervix, assist with the labour itself and support your body through recovery and milk production.

A word of caution; when your beautiful new baby arrives, it's easy to lose yourself in meeting its needs, but please hear me when I say – you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Look after yourself too, mum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. Pregnancy is incredibly demanding on your body – you're not just growing an entire human, your body is also creating lots more blood, several extra kilograms of uterine muscle, amniotic fluid, and a placenta – no mean feat! Because there are inadequate essential nutrients in our soil and food supply, all pregnant women require some level of nutritional supplementation.

Not only that but, as the baby's only source of nutrition, your body comes second in the pecking order, which means that without the correct nutritional support mum can experience deficiencies during, and for some time after, pregnancy. This can be more significant if there are other factors in play, such as pre-existing conditions, morning sickness, long-term deficiency and so on.

For the wellbeing of mum and baby, guided supplementation is strongly recommended – that means a prescription based on your individual requirements, from a qualified naturopathic practitioner. Your needs, and your baby's, will change as your pregnancy progresses. Supplementation can reduce the risk of a range of birth defects, as well as supporting your own wellbeing during pregnancy, and aiding recovery after birth.

In some cases, yes. While pre-conception care is actually the best way to reduce the impact of morning-sickness, that's not much help if you're already suffering! Somewhere in the region of half to two-thirds of pregnant women will experience some degree of morning sickness, particularly in the first trimester. Symptoms typically appear by the 4th or 6th week and last throughout the first trimester, settling around the 12th to 16th week of pregnancy. Naturopathy focuses on supporting blood sugar control, hormone management and ensuring adequate hydration.

In some, rare, cases herbal support can be offered.

Broadly speaking, you should avoid excessive exercise and any remedies not provided by a health care practitioner aware of your circumstances. Also:

  • raw eggs, meat, chicken and seafood.
  • fermented foods.
  • foods high in mercury or other heavy metals such as swordfish, shark, tuna.
  • caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes and recreational drugs.

It's important to ensure that you're in tip-top shape as you look forward to the delivery of your precious bundle. That might mean support to improve your energy levels or quality of sleep, as well as preparing your body for the experience of labour.

Naturopathic medicine can help to ensure good muscle tone and health of your uterus, to optimise contractions and decrease time in labour, as well as natural remedies for softening and toning your cervix. It can also support iron levels, to reduce the risk of post-partum haemorrhage.

When the hard work is done, the next bit of really hard work can begin – healing your body while nurturing your new baby. Again, naturopathy can help through supports for post-natal healing and to encourage the quality and flow of breastmilk.

Yes! I can support you to change your dietary choices, the way you eat, and provide natural support in the form of probiotics and, if necessary, herbal treatments. In the first instance reduce intake of white bread, pasta, sugar and pastry, slow your eating – chewing each mouthful 20 to 30 times, avoid spicy foods and eat smaller portions more frequently.

Pregnancy fatigue can be hugely debilitating, particularly if you're still trying to keep up with other children! If you're suffering, there are a range of areas we need to examine – including sleep, energy, diet, water intake and nutrition. As your pregnancy progresses, your needs will change. Experiencing symptoms such as fatigue can indicate that your body needs a little extra help.

From improving the quality of your sleep, to providing nutritional guidance and supplementation, we start by understanding more about what's going on in your body, and in your life, to create workable solutions for you.
